Facet5: How Well Do You Know Yourself?

Latest News

Most of us would probably say we know ourselves pretty well.

We know whether we’re naturally outgoing or reserved. We know whether we like structure or prefer flexibility. We probably have a reasonable idea of how we respond under pressure, how comfortable we are taking the lead and whether we’re more likely to challenge an idea or quietly consider it first.

But knowing yourself socially and understanding how your personality influences the way you work aren’t necessarily the same thing, and that’s where things get interesting.

The Person You Bring to Work

Every one of us brings our personality into the workplace. It influences how we communicate, make decisions, respond to pressure, manage conflict, approach deadlines and interact with the people around us. It can affect the type of environment in which we thrive, the way we lead and even what we need from our own manager.

And because other people bring their personalities with them too, the workplace becomes a melting pot of different preferences, motivations and behaviours.

The colleague who wants to discuss an idea immediately may be working alongside someone who needs time to process it. One person might naturally challenge assumptions, while another instinctively looks for consensus. Someone may see a rapidly approaching deadline as energising. Someone else may find exactly the same situation uncomfortable and stressful.

Neither response is necessarily right or wrong. They’re simply different, and understanding those differences can make an enormous difference to how effectively people work together!

What Is Facet5?

Facet5 is a personality profiling tool based on the widely recognised Five Factor Model of personality. It explores five broad areas of personality:

Will: determination, independence and the way we approach challenge.

Energy: enthusiasm, sociability and adaptability.

Affection: trust, support and our orientation towards other people.

Control: discipline, responsibility and our preference for structure.

Emotionality: our emotional responses, including apprehension and sensitivity to stress.

Together, these factors, and the individual facets within them, create a far more detailed picture of how someone is likely to approach their work, relationships and environment.

The objective isn’t to put somebody into a box. Quite the opposite… it gives people a language through which they can better understand themselves and the differences they see in others.

Self-Awareness Changes the Conversation

One of the most valuable things about personality profiling is the opportunity to recognise behaviours we may otherwise take for granted.

Perhaps you like to make decisions quickly and become frustrated when others want more information. Perhaps you naturally take control of group situations without realising that quieter colleagues are struggling to contribute. Maybe you prefer harmony and avoid difficult conversations for longer than you should. Or perhaps your preference for detail and structure means that a colleague’s more spontaneous approach can sometimes feel disorganised.

These characteristics aren’t inherently strengths or weaknesses… context matters! A tendency that serves you extremely well in one situation may become less helpful in another. Greater self-awareness allows you to recognise that and adapt when necessary.

And Then There’s Everyone Else…

Understanding yourself is only half of the equation. Imagine a team where people genuinely understand why their colleagues approach things differently.

Instead of: “Why can’t they just make a decision?” It becomes: “They need more information before they’re comfortable committing.”

Instead of: “They’re always challenging everything I say.” It might become: “They naturally test ideas and aren’t afraid of disagreement.”

That shift can be incredibly powerful! Differences that once created frustration can become complementary strengths. Communication can be adapted. Responsibilities can be allocated more effectively. Managers can understand what individual team members need from them rather than assuming everyone wants to be managed in the same way.

Facet5 can therefore become much more than an individual personality profile. It can provide a shared language for understanding how a team works together.

Better Teams Don’t Need Identical People

It’s tempting to think that the strongest teams are made up of people who naturally work well together. But effective teams don’t necessarily need people who think or behave in the same way. In fact, those differences can be enormously valuable.

An energetic creative thinker may benefit from working alongside someone who instinctively considers risk and detail. A determined, independent leader may benefit from colleagues who place greater emphasis on consultation and support.

The important part is recognising what each person brings to the table. When people understand their own preferences and those of their colleagues, difference becomes something that can be used, rather than something that simply has to be managed.

How Well Do You Really Know Yourself?

Perhaps that’s the most interesting question Facet5 asks. Not “What type of person are you?” But: How do you naturally behave at work..? What motivates you..? What frustrates you..? How might other people experience working with you..? What environment helps you perform at your best..? What happens to your behaviour when you’re under pressure..?

And… how can you adapt your approach when you’re working with someone whose preferences are very different from your own?

Those are much more useful questions, particularly when the answers become the starting point for development rather than the end of the exercise.

As accredited and experienced Facet5 practitioners, Maximum Performance can manage the entire Facet5 process, providing individual feedback and helping participants understand their profile and apply those insights in the workplace.
