Cyrus is Managing Director of Maximum Performance and its associated brands, Maximum Coaching and Maximum HR. An exceptional trainer, facilitator and coach, he also has a specialism in performance management. He has helped organisations in the private, public and third sectors to increase their performance through a range of interventions covering leadership challenges, motivational management, executive 1:1 coaching and the design of performance management processes, competency frameworks, etc.
Key areas of expertise
Cyrus started working in L&D some 15 years ago and has deliberately made career choices that ensured he remained involved in developing others ever since. Whether developing organisations, teams or individuals, Cyrus has demonstrated success at all levels with his natural enthusiasm and passion for the subject. Cyrus believes that development is essentially about creation and not consumption and his enthusiastic style of delivery supports his philosophy.
Cyrus has developed appraisal / performance management / individual development systems – including competency frameworks – for a range of organisations over the years, with a particular focus on the performance conversation rather than the paperwork. If managers have the confidence and skills to give and receive feedback then the systems will not seem so onerous. He works with organisations to develop supporting behavioural frameworks – sometimes from a blank sheet of paper – that will focus on employees having the right technical and behavioural mix to really add value to their organisation.
Cyrus is passionate about coaching, and has recently developed an organisational-wide coaching programme for the Big Lottery Fund. His current / recent clients include the BBC, 3M, Accenture, Inter Hannover, Lancashire Group, Legoland, Merlin Entertainments, Mouchel, Phytopharm, Berkshire NHS, The Gap Partnership, Central Bedfordshire Council, RED Consulting, Gala Coral, Thomson Reuters, Housing Solutions, De Lage Landen, the Methodist Church, South Bank University, Whitbread, Shaw Trust and the Big Lottery Fund, to name but a few.
Formerly an internal learning and development consultant to the Ministry of Justice, Cyrus’s achievements there ranged from a major business process re-engineering project to designing performance management systems and competency frameworks for over 12,000 staff and creating a range of management programmes for middle / senior civil servants that are still being run to this day.
‘Cyrus coached me during 2012 and helped me to discover the best in me. Through regular sessions (six over the year) Cyrus worked with me to help me discover my strengths, identify areas of improvement and encouraged me work on them. He never told me what to do (even though I asked more than once!) but helped me to recognise these areas myself. Since working with Cyrus I have furthered my career and have a plan for where I want to be – and more importantly, how I’m going to get there. I can’t recommend him enough!’
– Emma Hughes, Xchanging
‘The coaching really made me challenge myself and the way I do things and think about the barriers I put in the way of achieving something. It also helped me to challenge those around me and be more assertive where necessary but also to consider the needs of others, beyond the usual support I would provide. The coaching has made me think through how I work with others, particularly in relation to delegating and line management. The work that we did made me address gaps in my own knowledge and seek out opportunities that I hadn’t previously taken. Although never one to rest on my laurels the coaching definitely motivated me and now when I’m stuck with something I challenge myself to solve it and find a solution.’
– Manager, Public sector
‘I strongly recommend Cyrus Cooper from Maximum Performance. He supports us with our Management Development Programme and has run coaching sessions with the Executive Team and Senior Manager Team. I can’t recommend him highly enough.’
– Wendy Karban, Head of Human Resources, Housing Solutions
‘I have had the pleasure of working with Maximum Performance (and Cyrus Cooper in particular) to deliver a coaching programme across the Big Lottery Fund. We co-constructed and piloted the programme to skill managers in the basics of coaching and create a programme of development for Senior Leaders to also build their coaching skills. What Cyrus delivered was a programme that impacted on us with a huge amount of insight, interest and invigoration around coaching as a key skill in our leaders, managers and talent programme participants. We are about to launch our own internal coaching network that will continue and spread the great work Cyrus did for us.’
– Perry Timms, Head of Talent & Organisational Development, BIG Lottery Fund
‘The three sessions I spent with Cyrus were invaluable; he helped me think differently about how I work with colleagues to get the best out of them and me. I came away with some extremely useful tools and techniques for meetings and brainstorms which are simple yet very effective in day to day scenarios. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Cyrus to a colleague or client.’
